Razi Winery

I had the pleasure of photographing Razi Wineries a few weeks ago. Razi is a small winery located in the Napa Valley. I was given a half day to photograph the vineyards and the tasting room. This is a great example of a micro budget advertising shoot. I did not have any assistants and only a few hours in which to shoot mostly with natural lighting and small battery strobes. I wanted bright, colorful and fresh images so I used the natural light and opened my primes up wide to get some dramatic shallow focus in the bright vineyards.

Lancaster Citizens of the Year 2010

Deputy Foss is the deputy of the year, I tried a variety of settings for his portrait, next a memorial, by the police car... At the end of the shoot I just didn't like them so I dropped down and framed him up in the sky. Many times the most simple shot is the best.

Firefighter Jeff was singled out as the firefighter of the year, he lead a group of local firefighters to Haiti where they helped pull many people out of the rubble.

Marco & Sandra founded The University of Antelope Valley. Their school has grown tremendously and includes a culinary program. Classes were ongoing so I decided to photograph them in the midst of a class.

I recently produced a promo video for Women of Hope, a non-profit group working with women and families in Afghanistan. I will be producing a longer piece that deals with more of the big picture of what W.O.H does. In the meantime I have taken one of the more notable stories from my interviews and edited it into a short piece. The photos are mostly royalty free courtesy of the Department of Defense with a few privided by Women of Hope. I shot all of this with a single fusion DSLR with available light in the home of a couple who works with W.O.H.

I spent a late afternoon last week shooting Jackie & Andrew's engagement pictures in Laguna Beach. I love Laguna Beach, the city beach has some great coves and rocks that I find interesting and fun for couples. Jackie and Andrew like the village so I photographed them in the village then went down to the beach briefly for the sunset. I prefer doing engagements in the early morning but the late afternoon right before sunset is also a great time.

I will be launching a new site soon dedicated to helping the non professional photographer take better photos. The goal of the site is to give simple non technical advice. Here is my first article:

12 Steps to Better Photos:

1. Forget about the camera. This is mostly for the guys- we tend to obsess over the technology- any camera (including your cell phone) today is capable of taking a great picture. Forget about the gear and use your eyes and feet to find the best photo.

2. Slow down. 10 great photos are much better than 1000 bad ones. Think about the photo you are taking, what story do you want to tell. Try closing one eye to see the world in 2D.

3. Move. Most people take photos standing straight and never bother to change their perspective. Get low, get higher, tilt the camera, jump, do whatever it takes to find a fresh angle on the shot. I suggest shooting an image and then changing the perspective radically and shooting again.

4. Watch your background. We tend to focus on the subject of our photo and sometimes forget about what is behind it. Generally the simpler the background- the better. Try getting a high angle to use the grass as a simple backdrop or go really low and use the blue sky. Look for solid color walls. Watch out for distracting backgrounds that take away from your image.

5. Simplify. Don't try to fit everything in the photo, usually this leads to a chaotic image without any focus. Find one thing you want to shoot and eliminate the rest. Powerful images are usually simple ones.

6. Smile. We want our subjects to be relaxed and happy. The easiest way to make your subject relaxed and happy is to be relaxed and happy. Smiles are contagious.

7. Zoom in for people. People look better when the lens is longer so zoom in. A long lens compresses lines in the face making everyone a little younger. When you zoom in the depth of field (area of sharp focus) narrows making your subject pop off the background.

8. Zoom Out move in. Wide angle is generally not flattering for people, if you do use it try to keep them out of the edges where the lens distortion is most noticeable. A wide angle lens can give a dramatic point of view especially when you move in close to the subject. Experiment with the perspectives of your lens and learn how the perspective changes the way a subject appears.

9. Try Manual. The automatic modes on your camera are generally pretty good most of the time, especially in bright light. However by using the cameras manual function you can sometimes get more creative controlled results. You can also try using the auto exposure adjustment dial. One quick example: You are inside at a party with low lighting. Try going to iso800 exposure time 1/30th and f2.8 or f4.o. Make sure the flash is on. The camera in automatic will likely pick a fast exposure time and the ambient light in the room would be lost. You can use slower exposure times to capture some of the atmosphere and rely on the flash to correctly expose your subject. Try even slower times for more of the same effect. If you have a newer DSLR push the iso to 1600 to let in even more ambient light.

10. Lines & Composition. Look for lines that lead into your subject, the eye will follow lines in an image, try to control the lines and have them lead into your image.

11. Off Center. You do not need to always center your subject, in fact most of the time the subject should not be dead center. Try placing subjects in the thirds on either side. (artists call this a rule of thirds) If your subject is looking or moving somewhere give them some room in that direction by placing 2/3rds of the image in front. Also when framing a close up of the face it is the chin not the forehead that gives the face shape, so feel free to crop in close leaving the top of the head out sometimes.

12. Light. Good light makes good photos. All the expensive gear in the world is meaningless without good light. Try shooting landscapes in the early morning right as the sun comes up or the late afternoon as it sets. People look better at these times as well. If you do have to shoot in the middle of the day use flash to fill in shadows and look for shade or spots where the light is redirected from the sides. Pay attention to the light.

Fusion Video|Photojournalism: Nike Case Study

I have addressed video fusion in my blog before, in short new cameras allow me to shoot high quality stills and video in the same camera body allowing me to be a photographer and videographer on the same night.

Case study:

Nike needed photos and video of a community event sent the same night to their corporate offices in Oregon. I suggested that I shoot fusion with my Canon 7D capturing stills and video that was file based and ready to upload and watch. I captured the event as usual switching back and forth between stills and video. We had two laptops uploading and I sent files for viewing in Oregon that same night. The Nike executives were able to see the kids at the event and get a feel for where their marketing dollars were going.

A little more about the technology:

The Canon cameras shoot video in the popular QT H264 format that is instantly ready to view on a computer. Traditionally video is captured to tape and then must be digitized into a computer then converted into the needed broadcast format which takes time. With the new cameras and a fast internet connection we can very inexpensively shoot and distribute the video minutes later. I can shoot 640x480 SD 1280x720HD and 1980x1080 Full HD. The video is stunning and has a more cinematic feel due to the narrower depth of field.

The Limitations:

Video files are large and it is essential to have a fast internet connection. We were stymied a bit by a very slow overloaded DSL on the night. Luckily I shot SD video and I was able to get about 2 minutes of video up to Oregon about an hour after it occurred. With a standard DSL it would have only taken about five to ten minutes. Later that night I sent a quick 16 minute edit of all the good footage.

The cameras are not great for sports or anything that moves fast, I have to manual focus once the camera is running and it is very difficult tracking motion that is quick.

Conclusion:

Fusion/hybrid cameras that shoot video and stills are a promising new tool that I am using to continue to provide my clients with flexible quality multimedia at a strong value. This fusion process is especially good for events that need a highlight/ sizzle reel and some great photographs. I can competently shoot both video and stills and deliver a strong product at a tremendous value.

Wedding planners beware! She's about 5' 1" 110 lbs- with a penchant for Addidas pants and faux fur hats. She will crash your wedding party, do the conga line and swill champagne straight out of the bride and grooms bottle! She's bold, up for fun and definitely not invited!

The crasher from Dorothy and Roberts' wedding last weekend was captured and released, her name and whereabouts are unknown.

Around this time last year Canon and Nikon came out with the first generation of hybrid professional still cameras that also capture HD video in stunningly high quality. The cameras were great but still had some usability issues. This week Canon announced its' second generation hybrid the 7D. The 7D is the perfect camera for the multimedia services that I want to give my clients. I expect to get my 7D by the beginning of October at the latest, and I will use it to offer video vignettes with any photography service.

Video vignettes will be key moments from your wedding captured on HD video. The vows, kiss, first dance, Father/Daughter, cake cutting and other highlights will be captured and edited together to make a short highlight video. I expect to deliver 1 to 4 minutes of video for every 1 hour I am at a wedding. For a limited time I am offering this service for free to anyone who books my storyteller package for $2495. This means that you will get two photographers including myself, beautiful photos on disc, an engagement session with sign in frame, custom prints, a huge 12 by 15" album, and a beautiful HD highlight video on DVD-R (for the computer). Style Without Substance

I spend a lot of time looking at other photographers work, and I am inspired by many of them; there are so many great wedding photographers working today. I also see a lot of work that I feel is style without substance. By that I mean images with style and beauty but that do not serve to tell the story. As an artist I want to capture beautiful and unique images, but as a wedding photographer I must never forget that my number one job is to document your wedding. I think many great photographers forget this from time to time. I see some great unique photos on websites that look stunning but do not really capture the moment. Sometimes I will look through slide shows and see lots of stunning images that do not really capture the story of the couple and the day. I wonder how many great moments went undocumented while the photographer looked for unique angles or eclectic compositions. I never take more than a few seconds to take an image when a story is unfolding. I am always watching for moments that are a part of the story. Capturing those moments as beautifully and diversely as I can is my philosophy on wedding photography. I am a documentarian first and foremost and any art that I create is in service of the storytelling.

So I encourage you, look at a series of images from a wedding; do you see the story unfold? Do the images take you to a time and place and capture the moments and emotions that happened on that date and place? Are the images personal and custom to that family? Are they diverse and broad capturing a range of emotions and expressions? Do you see unique people and get a feel for who they are? When you look at a photographers' work ask yourself these questions and you will get a good idea of how your story will be told.

Change of Perspective aka MOVE!

When I shoot a wedding I end the day with aching feet and back. Shooting a wedding is almost a sport for me! I see some photographers who are great technically and get in the right spot but they shoot everything standing up from exactly the same vantage point. This leads to technically good shots but missing some of the dynamic angels that can add some much life to a photo. When I shoot an event I shoot over my head and on the floor and everywhere in between. I took some photos of my second photographer Darvin at Sundays wedding to illustrate my point. I love working with Nike- it is always fresh and new and fun. First it was an in store (Niketown LA) with Trevor Ariza- starting forward for the world champ LA Lakers. Then on Fathers Day (My 1st Father's day as a Dad!) we did the dedication of the brand new P Rod skatepark in Pacoima. The Nike Skateboarding team did a demonstration and then they let the skaters lose. It was crazy & chaotic the perfect opening for a skatepark.

Custom Prints Demystified

What is a custom print, why do you need a custom print?

I deliver all of my images ready to print on the disc- always. They have been color corrected and adjusted for optimal exposure, contrast and sharpness. On top of that I always include at least 20 custom black & whites and extra touches like vignettes. So you can make your own prints.

A Custom print goes a step further. I touch up blemishes and smooth out skin (air brushing), I brighten eyes and whiten teeth. I can also do custom color effects like sepia or selective colors.

Photo Processing Demystified

The most important part of making a great photograph happens when the photo is taken. The post production (Processing) of the photo is very important also. Good post processing of a photo can make a good photo great and sometimes even a poor photo can be made great.

Many photographers, especially those in my price range do not process their photos. They take the photo as a jpeg in the camera and put it on a disc and are done. I always process my photos- for every hour of shooting I spend on average 45-60 minutes on the computer. A JPEG is a processed photo, the camera captures much more information than is present in the JPEG. If a photographer shots JPEG they are relying on the settings they have entered into the camera. The photo is taken and the processor (the computer in the camera) makes the JPEG. All the other information is discarded. I shoot in a raw format that preserves all the other information so that I may control the creation of the JPEG later. Maybe one photo needs different settings than another. A shot of the brides face should have less sharpness than the details of a flower for instance. I also have much more latitude in the photo to adjust the exposure and color to get the photo right. Note the picture on the top, the color picked by the camera was a little too blue so I warmed the color and added some additional contrast to make the image pop.

I also always provide some extra special color and black and white images. A standard black and white that you get at the photo lab just removes all the color information. A custom black and white adjusts all the color channels individually to control contrast. I also adjust the exposure and total contrast and brightness. See the difference for yourself:

This was a high contrast shot with strong backlighting. In order to make the image pop I oversaturated (pushed the colors) and went with strong contrast.

Terri Lyne Carrington: More To Say

About two years ago I documented the recording of Terri Lyne Carrington's album: More to Say. The album has finally been released. I videotaped and photographed the recording of the album in a Los Angeles recording studio. You can see the video here. One advantage that I offer my clients is the ability to shoot video and still photography. On this project I was able to effectively document the album recording process through photos and video saving the producers thousands of dollars.

About 50% of the video and photos are mine, I did not edit the video. Some of my photos are in the liner notes but the cover is not mine. It was a very interesting and fun project for me seeing behind the scenes and I was very impressed by the skill and professionalism of the musicians.

My uncle has a great camera, he'll shoot my wedding free!

I shot Andrew and Lelian's wedding two weekends ago, they are a wonderful couple and had a great group of warm family and friends. They also had an army of photographers! Everytime I turned around there were 4-7 family members shooting away. Some of them were serious amateurs with thousands of dollars in equipment. Which all begs the question- why hire me?

I will go over a few reasons why a seasoned wedding photographer like me is worth the investment. I will also go over a lot of the common mistakes I see in amatuer photography.

As a photojournalist I do my best to get great shots without inserting myself into the action. I want to work quietly most of the time and capture real moments and real beauty. In this manner I capture the event without being obtrusive and in the way. Many times amateurs plant themselves right in the way during the ceremony and frequently flash away at key moments. I use highly sensitive lenses so I do not need flash during the ceremony and I always try to find great angles without blocking anyones view. This comes from shooting over 50 weddings and

having a good sense of where to be when.

Move! As a photographer I am constantly moving, amatuers many times find one or two spots that they think are good and stay there, usually shooting at standing height. My back and feet ache after a wedding because I am always moving around scanning looking for great moments and unique perspectives. I might put the camera on the floor I might hold it high over my head for a few frames, sometimes during the reception I even jump and I am always climbing on the furniture!

Details & Close ups. Amatuers usually see just the single frame one at a time. This is normal logic for most and has to be unlearned by the pro. I am always seeing images in series to tell the story. An amatuer will certainly get the bride and groom at the altar and close ups of each face. They are unlikely to capture the hands clasped together or a tear on the Father of the Brides face, or a best man snapping away with his cell phone... I look beyond the typical shots and try to capture all the small details. I get the important typical shots too but I try to find the less cliche as well. The amatuer will many times try to crame everything about the story into ever frame and miss isolating the small details and moments.

Experience. Weddings can be very challenging, they are designed to be special for the guests not for the photographer. Photographers have to be ready to make beautiful images with very little control of the lighting or positioning of people and objects. There are no re-shoots we have to get it right the first time. Nothing substitutes for experience, great gear is good but knowing how to use it is crutial. I learn more and more as I shoot weddings, this wedding for example had very harsh noon lighting. I had to get creative and find shade, then I had to use special processing techniques to get the most out of my lighting. Amatuers will sometimes buy a great camera but ignore all the little accessories and items that pros know are crucial. One or more of the "amatuer" photographers may have even been professionals in another field of photography- nothing substitutes for actually shooting weddings.

Meredith and Jason met working at Bubba Gump Seafood Restaurant. Say what you want about themed restaurants but I love the food at Bubba Gump- if I have to endure Forrest Gump for the 40th time to get some great seafood I say bring it on!

I am trying to make more time for some personal photography. Recently I went out to document the mortgage crisis in my own development. My wife and I live in a large newer development in Palmdale, just north of LA. The development is beautiful but it has been hit hard by the mortgage meltdown. Entire neighboorhoods have been abandoned, some right before being completed. It is sad to see a big beautiful houses just rotting away. The photo above is an entire cul de sac of exactly that. In the above photo I desaturated the color and boosted the contrast, I then added three layers of textures to the image. I have not used textures much in my work but I plan to try to incorporate them more often in the future.

Nike Diamond Days

I love working for Nike- they always have interesting promotions that do a lot of real good for the community. Most recently I just finished documenting the Diamond Days program. Nike knows how important girls high school sports can be in shaping young girls; so they work to promote high school girls athletics. The Diamond Days program focused on Softball. A few high schools participated; Nike helped train the girls and promote their games. Nike brought in world class atheletes and trainers to help the girls improve their games. Nike also held pep rallies at the school with DJ's, giveaways and dancers to promote the games. On game day Nike brought out Power 106 and tons of giveaways and free food.

It was so nice to be outside shooting video for a change.

I shot video of most of the events which will be edited into a sizzle reel (highlight video) of the entire program.

Andrew & Jen Wed

Andrew & Jen were married at the Castle Green in Pasadena. It was a beautiful wedding and the couple, their family and friends were a joy to work with.

Here are a couple shots from the wedding with some commentary on my style and method:

Extreme wide angles can add drama to a shot. I also try to find a unique angle. Usually I shoot a scene in a traditional way to make sure I have a good shot that tells the story, then I will find a unique angle to add some style and drama to the shot. I did not pose this shot I just saw Jen move to the flower and got on my tiptoes and held the camera as high as I could for a few frames. Luckily Andrew took notice and looked up.

I find a bit of a tilt can add to a unique composition. Here I placed the flowers on the right to add color to the composition and the building and title stone above to give a sense of the place. Hopefully the eye is drawn first to the couple then takes in the scene around them. During formals I will do some posing where necessary, Jen and Andrew mostly were already in position and did not need much instruction.

I love detail shots, they add so much to the story and really help fill in the memories in years to come. I always use a macro (special close up lens) and get as many little details as I can. One of the most common mistakes amateur photographers make is that they try to fit everything into the frame. Get some wide shots- but then move in closer to show the small details that make up a time and place.

The most important tools I use are my eyes and my feet. I am always scanning a scene and looking for images. I am very tired at the end of a wedding because I am always walking, climbing and crouching to find the right angle and position for my photos. I was capturing the room details when I glanced back and noticed the bridal door was cracked open. I took a few shots allowing the door to frame Jen naturally. One of the bridesmaids then came over and snapped her own shot with her cell phone. I would have missed this great shot if I had not been scanning the room.

Some of the best shots happen when "nothing" is happening. I encourage my clients to allow time for photography before the ceremony. If the bride and groom are getting ready apart then I encourage they consider a second photographer as well. I was going back and forth between bride and groom and capturing what was occurring when I came upon the groom and groomsmen playing the guitar. As a photojournalist I do not arrange my subjects I move to the best position and take the shot. In this case I am standing on a small wall waiting for the right moment to get my shot.

During the ceremony I always have two cameras; one with a telephoto (for close ups) and one with a wide to medium zoom (for wider shots) I want to capture every moment that I can as quickly as possible. I will quietly change positions to capture close ups of the bride and the groom and some shots of the officiant and crowd as well. This was as Jen was reading her vows to Andrew. I also converted it to black and white and added a vignette (darkening the corners) to simplify and focus the image just on Jen. I always do some custom images like this even when the client has not paid for custom prints or albums.

The reception is a great time to capture the bride and groom and their guests. They are relaxed and just having a good time at that point. I am wandering the room scanning and trying to capture everyone in a natural unposed state of fun. Great moments like these are always in abundance at a wedding you just have to seek them out and be observant. If you are constantly planning what you will shoot rather than observing you will miss many of the real moments.

Becky & Stu Engagement Session @ Disney Concert Hall

I have always loved the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA and I finally found a couple willing to go for an engagement session. Beaches and parks make for great locations, but I wanted to do something different and dramatic and the Concert hall really fit the bill.

Engagement sessions are a lot of fun- we are away from all the stress of the wedding day and the couple can relax and get some great shots. It also gives them a chance to work with me and see how my style fits with their own. Right now I am offering a free engagement session to any package booking.

Bluray is HERE!

Bluray represents the next great leap in home video. Bluray discs allow you to view high definition content on your HD television set at home. HD comes in a few varieties, 720P, 1080i and 1080P. 1080P is the highest and it is what Bluray is capable of displaying. Standard definition video is at best 720 by 480 pixels (dots) in resolution (detail) HD is up to 6 times more detail maxing out at (1080 by 1920). For any of you that are watching 1080i or 720p television you know how much clearer and sharper it is. In fact I find it difficult to go back to watching standard definition video afterwards! It can really spoil the viewer. Please understand that you can not view HD video on a regular DVD. Companies that claim this are simply lying to you. Just because a video is shot on a high definition camera does not mean that it is delivered to you in HD. The only way to view your wedding or event video in HD at home is on the computer or through Bluray.

I have waited on the sidelines for about a year now as Bluray has been tested and improved and I am now ready to produce Bluray content for my clients. We are now on the third generation cameras for shooting HD content, and their has been much improvement from the first HD cameras. The same is true for the editing tools. I have just purchased a brand new editing system and software and I am ready to deliver the best to my clients.

Wednesday it was back to Vegas for Lionsgate. Lionsgate sponsored a lunch for the Cinemark Managers conference at Southpoint. JKP Events provided 2 green screen set-ups for the attendees to get their photos added to the Lionsgate One-Sheet. Instead of offering the photos immediately we elected to use tickets, guests then needed to come to Lionsgate's booth at the convention the next day to retrieve their photos. This allowed us to serve more people and keep costs down, and also increased the foot traffic at the Lionsgate booth.

Thursday I continued the Nike Diamond Days Promotion at Carson High. Nike has been working with local high school girls athletics for years. The newest Diamond Days events are with local girls softball teams. Nike helps train the girls and promote the games by giving out prizes and helping the teams advertise their games. Nike even brings out Power 106 and Olympic softball players to the games and trainings. I have been documenting these events on video, which will be edited into a sizzle reel.

Vegas Baby! Showest 2009

My corporate event company: JKP Events provided a green screen concept for Lionsgate at this years Showest conference in Las Vegas. I have been working with Demetri, VP of Exhibitor Relations for Lionsgate for going on 4 years. I provide him with fun interactive green screen concept photo set-ups to promote their upcoming films.

Showest is where the theater chains come out to meet with the Distributors of movies. Lionsgate has a hospitality suite at Bally's. This year Demetri also added two Show Girls and guests took photos with the girls as well.

We had a lot of fun modifying the posters for this years films. Guests were able to be Jason Statham from Crank 2 jump starting his heart or they could expell extoplasm from the new horror thriller " A Haunting in Connecticut"

Custom Prints Demystified

What exactly is a custom print? Is there a difference between a print I make at Costco and one that I purchase from a professional photographer? The short answer is yes... usually.

The old photography model for wedding and social photographers was to own their images which was the negatives or slides and today (for most) the full resolution digital files. In this way they could make most of their income by charging incredibly inflated rates for the prints or albums. Many photographers such as myself have ended this practice. I just do not like this approach, you are hiring me to capture your moments and memories, you should own the images! In this manner you know exactly what you are spending and can decide wether or not it is worth it or in your budget to purchase albums or prints. I have already written a article about albums in an earlier post- this post is about custom prints.

Photographers always try to get the best exposure and color in camera when they take the picture. However images can almost always benefit from a second pass in the computer. We can adjust the exposure and the color and other levels to make sure that it is optimal and ready for printing. All reputable photographers should deliver ready to print images. This is what you receive from me on your disc. If you use a good lab you will have good images. A good lab can be referred by your photographer. I recommend a few online labs like Bay Photo and Smugmug, and certain Costco's like the one in Alhambra have given me consistently good results. My current custom prints are either from Bay Photo or printed by me at home on a large format Epson.

Custom prints should take things a step further- now what one photographer calls a custom print might be nothing more than what I described above. Ask for specifics, what does the custom print include? Some photographers will do what is called a batch processes and adjust the color and exposure for hundreds of photos based on one or two of them. Some will individual correct the images- this is always better and it is what I do. Even fewer photographers will include touch-ups like dodging and burning (lightening and darkening individual pieces of an image) air brushing (removing blemishes and smoothing skin tones) and effects and colorations. All of my custom prints include everything listed above.

Colorations include sepia and selenium tones and other custom color tones. Effects include vignettes (darkening corners) and more advanced image editing such as adding a color flower to a black and white. Black and whites are also custom created by adjusting individual tones and colors. A lab black and white will only take all the color out of the image and many times will look flat and undramatic. You can see an example here:

Notice the image on the right has more pop, if you look closely you can see more detail in the flowers and the veil and the whites are whiter while the blacks blacker. Many others effects and adjustments are possible, my clients usually give some input and then leave it to me to create the custom images as I see it. Meena Nanji Lifestyle Portrait for "Beautiful People"

Meena Nanji is a documentary filmmaker, I shot her portrait for Beautiful People a Vogue sister publication distributed internationally.

Meena is a remarkable woman she spent years in Afganistan right after the war began to document the lives of women there.

Her documentary is called "View From a Grain of Sand."

Meena was not used to being in front of the camera, she prefers like me to be behind it. After she relaxed a bit we got this shot which wasn't my favorite but was the image selected.

Demystifying The Wedding Album

If a picture says a thousand words, than a great storybook album can say a million. A well designed album takes all of your photos and crafts them into a story. It adds context, order and shape to your images. Five individual pictures viewed by themselves may not quite paint the picture but put together into a layout they can tell the story of the moments in which they were taken. The sum is greater than its' parts. A beautiful album will be a family heirloom for decades to come. It preserves your memories and keeps them fresh. Your grandchildren can re-live a day that was decades before their birth. I encourage all of my clients to prioritize a professionally designed album. There are many kinds of albums on the market today, and the terminology can be confusing and technical.

The most important piece of any album is the design. A true storyteller can see the images and fit them together to paint a vivid picture that tells the stories of the day. Most albums today are designed in a computer with special software. On the computer images can be altered and adjusted in thousands of ways while preserving the original. Computers allow us to fully utilize all our creativity and just create what we see in our heads. Traditional albums use pre cut mattes and force the creator into a rigid framework. With the computer we are free to design however and whatever we want. The design will follow the sizing of the finished printed book such as 8'' by 8" or 11 by 14". Many sizes are available. Some albums allow for designs to spread across the page, these are called panoramic and they are what I offer in my flush mount lines. Panoramics are beautiful and allow for huge and expressive layouts. They are what I prefer to design in.

Printing Methods:
There are two methods for printing albums. Flush mounts use real chemically printed photographs which are then mounted to parchment and then multicoated to protect the image. This yields a thick beautiful page with spectacular color and detail. Press printing is the other method. Offset presses print the images directly onto the page and then the book is bound. This is how books and magazines are printed. The quality is still quite good and the cost is significantly less because the materials and labor involved is a fraction of the flush mounts. Press printed books are also usually designed using templates which allow for less design freedom. Flush mounts are more durable overall, although the press printed books will last decades if properly cared for. A Flush Mount with multicoating will be less likely to tear or stain (if spilled on) as well.

I urge my clients to get the album that fits their budget, if they cannot fit the cost of the flush mount into their budget the press printed album is a great alternative.

New Technology, New Services!

I want to preface this post by saying that technology is not what makes for good photography. Photography is much more about composition, color, light, mood and gesture than it is about pixels and processing. The most important tool for a photojournalist (without sounding too cliche) is the eye and second is the feet. Seeing what is occuring and moving yourself to the right spot to capture it.

Having said all of this, I am very excited about a new camera system from Canon. I have always shot with Canon digital SLR's for weddings. I think they provide the best tool for capturing weddings and events, Nikon is very good also. The newest camera the 5D Mark 2 is a revolutionary camera. It alows me to capture beautiful stills and now video in a small compact camera package. I am a photographer and video documentarian and now I can use one tool for both! I am introducing two new services to all of my clients. I can now capture a wedding as a photographer and a videographer. I can quickly and efficiently capture everything around me as both beautiful still images and as full HD resolution (1080P) video! The new technology has finally freed me to do both. Notice how much more cinematic the video looks, this is because the 5D uses a sensor (the chip that captures the light or image) that mimics traditional 35mm film. It is the same size which leads to optically similiar characteristics, most notably depth of field. It is important to note that Canon gave Vincent tens of thousands of dollars to shoot this promotional short, which includes fancy mounts and a helicopter; but the image quality is as it came out of the camera.

I will be delivering bluray DVD soon, with bluray you will be able to watch your video in full HD on your HD TV. Anyone that tells you they are giving you HD video on a DVD for your TV is lying to you, or ignorant; it isn't possible.

The Cinematic Love Story:

I have been shooting Love Stories for years, a love story is a video documentary that includes photos and video from your engagement session and photos and home videos that you provide. It is great to show at the reception or display online, and it tells your story. The Cinematic Love Story adds an exciting twist, we will add a short narrative film or music video that captures more of your personality and can be funny and poignant. KB Home President's Meeting

KB Home hired me to shoot the president's annual meeting in Bel Air. I was struck by how positive and upbeat their executives were. The home building business is probably facing the worst market in many decades; yet KB Home is optomistic and doing their best to adjust. With an emphasis on efficiency and customer service KB Home is weathering the storm.

Nike In Store Promotion.

Nike, and their event marketing company OBE hired me to do a promotional poster shoot over last weekend. Me and my team shot over 50 girls high school sports teams and produced over 1500 11" by 17" posters. The job was daunting, I decided to rent 4 large format laser printers. Three failed! We got through it with plan B (back-up printer at Beverly Collection) and C (Staples next door! Valencia)

The idea is that girls teams could use the posters and a giveaway package supplied by Nike to promote their games. Nike has been great to work with over the past three years and they really do a tremendous amount for the local community.

Trish & Ken

I shot Trish and Ken in Sherman Oaks, CA. They were very fun and relaxed. They had already been married in Australia, so I think that took the pressure off! I loved this old red painted church for the background for the formals. Trish had a small kitchen which was really the only place I could photograph her before the ceremony, so I used the window as a high key background and got some great shots.
